Siding on a central Kentucky property

Siding

Siding fails at its joints, not its faces. J-channel at the windows, the corner posts and the course above a roof line are where water gets behind it, and where a repair either works or hides the problem.

Hail does not stop at the roofline. The same event that bruises your shingles dents vinyl siding across a whole elevation, and homeowners are often surprised to learn the siding belongs on the same claim. We install vinyl and fiber cement, and we document both when we document a storm.

What you are actually choosing between

Nobody should have to learn a trade to buy from it. Here is the honest version of each option, including where we would talk you out of one.

OptionWhat it isWhere it fits

Insulated vinyl

What it is

Vinyl panel with contoured foam bonded behind it, so the panel is backed rather than hollow.

Where it fits

Most vinyl re-sides worth doing. It adds a little R-value, but the real gain is rigidity: it stays flat, resists denting, and does not oil-can across a long wall the way hollow panel does.

Standard vinyl

What it is

Hollow panel in a range of profiles and colours, hung loose so it can move with temperature.

Where it fits

Budget-governed work and matching an existing wall. Perfectly serviceable when it is installed loose and flashed properly. Both of which are commonly got wrong.

Fiber cement board

What it is

A cement, sand and cellulose composite. Considerably heavier than vinyl, non-combustible, and it does not dent.

Where it fits

Homes that have already been hailed once, and anywhere the look of a wood profile matters. The trade-off is weight, cost and the need for real flashing discipline at every joint.

Repair versus full re-side

What it is

Replacing damaged panels against replacing the elevation.

Where it fits

Repair works when the profile is still made and the wall has not faded much. On a twenty-year-old wall a colour match is rare, so a partial repair often reads as a patch. We will say so before we do it.

When to do this in Kentucky

Vinyl becomes brittle in the cold and is easy to crack when handled below freezing, so deep winter is avoided. Fiber cement is field-painted in suitable conditions or it chalks, which rules out cold, damp spells. Spring through autumn is the working window. One timing point specific to storm work: if hail dented your siding, it belongs on the same insurance claim as the roof, and that claim has a reporting window, so the inspection should happen well before the weather is convenient.

Siding across Madison and Clark County

We work three towns, and they do not damage a roof the same way. Pick yours to see what actually fails there.

Richmond

Madison County

Ice damming at the eaves

January, during freeze-thaw

Madison County's hilly terrain pools cold air in the lower neighborhoods, so snowmelt refreezes at the eave and backs water up under the shingles where no amount of surface sealant reaches it.

Winchester

Clark County

Hail bruising, then algae on the north slopes

Hail March to May, algae year-round after

Winchester sits in a corridor that channels storms up from the southwest, and it sits low enough that fog settles in the mornings through spring and fall. The hail cracks the shingle mat; the standing moisture on the north-facing slopes then feeds moss and algae into the damage.

Berea

Madison County

Freezing rain and terrain-driven runoff

Late winter

The Cumberland Plateau foothills load the southern end of the county with freezing rain rather than snow, and the sloped lots around Indian Fort Mountain funnel a whole roof's runoff to a couple of eave points instead of spreading it evenly.
