Ventilation is arithmetic: net free area of intake against exhaust, against attic square footage. We measure rather than guess, because the usual finding is plenty of exhaust and almost no intake.
From inside we can see frost lines, staining, blocked eaves, and where fans are dumping moist air. The roof surface never tells the whole story.
Adding exhaust to a roof with no intake makes things worse, not better. Soffit venting and baffles at the eaves come first so there is a path for air to enter.
